Winifred "Winnie" A. Gallenstein, 94 of Weston, passed away Thursday September 6, 2012.
Winnie was born on August 28, 1918, in Wood County to John C. and Alice (Hummel) Aring. She married Eugene T. Gallenstein on April 15, 1950 and he preceded her in death on March 13, 1982.
Winnie was a graduate of Pemberville High School in 1936 and later Davis Business College in Toledo, Ohio.
Winnie was employed as a bookkeeper and cashier in a local independent grocery store (Virgil English) on West Wooster Street in Bowling Green until 1948 when he retired and closed the store. She later became the office secretary of the Wood County Chapter of the American Red Cross until late 1958. During this time the Red Cross Bloodmobiles were being organized and held in Wood County and Bowling Green supplying blood to Wood County Hospital and other areas. Following work with the Red Cross, Winnie was appointed Administrator Secretary for the Mayor's office for the City of Bowling Green, a position she held until her retirement in 1984. During this time, Winnie also served as the Clerk of the Bowling Green City Council.
Upon retirement, Winnie enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and a few foreign countries and also doing volunteer work. For many years, Winnie was a weekly volunteer at the Wood County Hospital in the Surgery Waiting Room and also volunteered at the American Cancer Society with its daffodil days and with relay for life. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bowling Green.
Winnie was a member of the Wood County Hospital Guild, American Legion Auxiliary No. 409 in Weston as well as St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Winnie is survived by her sister, Johanna (Bill) Libbe of Bradner; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother Kenneth.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the DECK-HANNEMAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1460 W. Wooster St., PO Box 648, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402; Tele: 419/352-2171. The Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday September 10, 2012 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 315 South College, Bowling Green with burial to follow in Fish Cemetery, New Rochester.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Weston EMS, American Cancer Society or to the charity of the donors' choice.
