At age 17 enlisted September 19, 1861, at Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and was mustered in as a private in Co. C, 19th Kentucky Infantry, on January 2, 1862. Private Bastin was mustered out Louisville, Kentucky, January 26, 1865.

BASTIN - Mr. Alex. A. Bastin, aged about 70, died at his home near Highland at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon after a long illness of heart trouble. A wife, three sons and two daughters survive. The burial occurred at Mt. Moriah at 3 o'clock yesterday. Mr. Bastin was a kind-hearted, clever man and many friends sorrow at his death. He was a Union soldier and had been a pensioner for years. He had been a member of the Christian church since his youth.
