Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was editor and proprietor of the "Ohio State Journal", in Columbus, Ohio. In December 1861, Ohio Governor William Dennison appointed him to fill the vacancy for a Major in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. During the September 1862 Antietam Campaign, he took command of the regiment after his commander was wounded at Battle of South Mountain on September 14, 1862. As Colonel of the 23rd Ohio Regiment, he led his men in successive charges and assaults against the Confederates at the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. For his courage and leadership, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war he was Postmaster of Columbus, Ohio and later served as United States Minister to the Hawaiian Islands, 1877 to 82. In 1883, he returned to Ohio, where he owned and edited the "Toledo Commercial" until his death.
