James "Schoon" A. Schoonover, 58, of 604 S. Main St., died on Thursday, July 20, 2006, at home. He was born in Janesville on Aug. 12, 1947, the son of Elgie L. and Dorothea M. (Franklin) Schoonover. He graduated from Janesville Senior High School in 1966 and attended Blackhawk Technical College. James served in the Marine Corps during Viet Nam in the 3rd Marine Division Engineers, and had been a Janesville resident all of his life. He married Cheryle A. Dampier on Sept 20, 1969, at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. He was a self-employed carpenter at Schoonover & Sons until retiring in 1995 due to his battlewith M.S. James was a member of St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryle; 3 children: twin daughters JoAnn (Daniel) Miles of Janesville and Katie (Edward) McAfee of Beloit and Cal J. Schoonover of Janesville. and 4 grandchildren: Jayci Miles, Dallen McAfee, Jadden McAfee and Kyen McAfee.
He was preceded in death by his parents and mother in law, Jean Dampier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006, at ST. JOHN ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, with Fr. Donn Heiar presiding, interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and again on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at the Church.
James worked hard all his life and would do anything for his family.
