French Nobility. Renée de Valois-Orléans, Duchess of Chartres and Montargis. Renée was the second daughter of King Louis XII of France and Anne de Bretagne, after her father's death in 1515, was greeted at the court of her brother-in-law Francis I. On June 28, 1528 in Paris, Renée married the Duke Ercole II d'Este, bringing in dowry the Duchy of Chartres, the county of Gisors the lands of the Castle of Montargis and thus becoming Countess of Ferrara. After the death of Ercole II in 1559, she preferred to leave Ferrara and moved at her castle of Montargis in France where died in 1574.
