Word has been received of the death of James Crawford Slifer of Springfield, formerly of Effingham, who died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at St. John's Hospital, Springfield.

Funeral services were November 2, 2001 at Laurel United Methodist Church, Springfield, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield. Bisch Funeral Home West, Springfield, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. John's Hospital Cardiac Rehab, Springfield.

Mr. Slifer was born in Effingham, the son of Clayton and Irene (Crawford) Slifer. He married Beverly Bettenhausen in 1961.

He was the director of highways for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, having worked with IDOT for more than 30 years; was member of Laurel United Methodist Church, Springfield; and was a member and past commodore of the Springfield Motor Boat Club.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Barry K. (wife,Angela) of Carlinville, Kevin J. (wife, Nan) of St. Joseph; daughter, Ann V. (husband, Robert) Bond of Springfield; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
