Cinematographer, Special Effects Artist. Born in Michigan, he was raised in Los Angeles and joined Paramount's special effects department straight out of high school. One of the finest process photographers in the business, Griggs helped create the spectacular earthquake sequence for "San Francisco" (1936) and shared a technical Academy Award for "Spawn of the North" (1938). He finally graduated to director of photography in 1951 and won an Oscar for his beautiful color lensing of the classic western "Shane" (1953). Three more Oscar nominations followed, for "The Ten Commandments" (1956), "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965), and "In Harm's Way" (1965). Among his other credits are "White Christmas" (1954), "The Bridges at Toko-Ri" (1954), "The Buccaneer" (1958), "Papa's Delicate Condition" (1962), and "Bunny O'Hare" (1971). Throughout his late career as a cinematographer Griggs continued to do visual effects work for such films as "Vertigo" (1958), "Paint Your Wagon" (1969), and "Airport" (1970). He retired in 1971.
