David spent his early years at the home of his parents, Dr. Edwin E. Hunter and Mollie Jobe Hunter, in Elizabethton, Tennessee. His father was a farmer, and physician, and his mother came from a physician background. David had at least 6 siblings. He attended college for two years. On September 5, 1904, David married 18 year old Nellie Priscilla Griggs, daughter of Josephine Tipton Griggs of Elizabethton, Tennessee and Marcus Griggs of Roanoke, Virginia. On July 14, 1905, Eugene Griggs Hunter was born to the young couple. He would be their only child. In 1918, David's World War II Draft Registration says his address was Elizabethton, his wife was Nellie, and his occupation was jobbering coal in Johnson City. He was of medium height and build, had brown eyes and light hair. In 1920, the family is living on Roan St. Johnson City, TN. With them live two of David's brothers. The 3 men are all wholesale shoe merchants. Eugene is 14 years old. In 1930, the family is living with David's brother Fred on E. Nineth Ave in Johnson City. He is a manager of a gas station. They were still living in Johnson City in 1935, however soon David got lung cancer and the family went to live in Kingsport with their son's family. Eugene was a lawyer there, and he had a wife Kayte Wray and two children, Eugene 4 and Kathryn, an infant. So David spent his last years surrounded by his family before the cancer spread and he died at the age of 58. His last occupation was an office worker of an oil distributor. David was buried at Monte Vista Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee on Apr. 11, 1940. Services were handled by Morris Funeral Home. Of interest to note is that David and Nellie were distant cousins, both direct descendant of one of the Tennessee founding fathers Col. John Tipton. Perhaps they never even knew it.
