William came to America on 4 July 1909 on the S.S. Columbia with the Port of Arrival being New York. He stayed with his brother, John Potter in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.(John Potter later moved to Michigan where he lived the remainder of his life. His wife's name was Marina and they had 1 son, John.) William Law (wife, Mary) was also a close friend of Grandpop's who also came to America and had a family here. (They also resided in the Philadelphia area.)
He applied for citizenship in the USA on 4 May 1918 and was granted citizenship on 4 May 1920. William Law was his sponsor here in America.
One family story was that Grandpop Potter would send food to Scotland and he sent canned corn and someone in Scotland got offended due to the fact that that is what you feed animals or livestock. Grandpop Potter was working on a project out on the front porch and he basically dropped dead. They lived on Leonard St., Phila., Pa. Someone carried him into the house and laid him on the couch. He died from Acute Coronary Thrombosis. He was laid to rest 23 Jul 1956 at the age of 69. His father was; John Potter. His mother was; Helen Thomson. (His parents never came to America.
