Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award as a private in Company L, 8th US Cavalry, on July 24, 1869 for his actions against the Apache Indians from August to October 1868. He was one of 34 cavalrymen who received the award on that day. An Irish immigrant, he joined the US Army in St. Louis, Missouri in 1867 and took part in battles with the Native Americans during their excursions on the Western frontier. He was later assigned to Fort Whipple in Prescott, Arizona and in In 1872 he was finally discharged from Fort Union, New Mexico, having attained the rank of sergeant. He then returned to Arizona and worked the mines in the McCabe district for 35 years before permanently settling in Prescott. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Bravery in scouts and actions against Indians."
