Daughter of Johann Hirschmann & Maria Thomann Hirschmann in Augsburg, Germany. She was their third child. She had two older brothers, Johann and Siegfried Hirschmann.

She was in Germany until the end of WWII. She met and married an American soldier, Fred Hartman. Sophie was one of the first "war brides" in Bavaria. Fred and Sophie moved back to the United States to Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were both charter members of Fort Wayne Sports Club, Sophie attaining the "50" year member status.

Among Sophie's greatest accomplishments was when she earned and achieved American citizenship of which she was very proud. The Hartmans were blessed with two children, Marianne Hartman Jackson and Michael Hartman. A dedicated daughter, Sophie also brought her mother Maria to America in the early 50s to live with her. Sophie spent the next 20+ years being a fantastic mother, awesome friend, cook extraordinaire and "fashion plate". She enjoyed family and friends and loved to laugh and have a great time.

Sophie was a strong person and began working fulltime. Adversity was never an issue she couldn't overcome. She still maintained her family unit with kids and her mother. She worked in the Homestead High School cafeteria; was the bakery manager at Waynedale Bakery for many years, and finally retired from Orchard Ridge Country Club where she worked in the kitchen. During all of this, Sophie not only cared for her mother, she and her mother-in-law, Geneva Lemke were inseparable.

Sophie was known for her sense of humor, her love for clothes, fashion, and "movie stars", her directness and her genuine love for her fellow man. She had a huge heart and was loyal to everyone she cared about and for.

After health issues, in 2002, Sophie relocated to Noblesville, IN to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She moved to Noble Manor Village and quickly settled in. She spent her time cooking, taking care of her family, crocheting beautiful afghans and potholders, and of course, baking the best pound cakes and streusels known to man!

After a long battle with illnesses, Sophie was lifted by the hands of the Lord and she left this earth on August 26, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, and her ex-husband, Fred Hartman in 1989.

She leaves to honor her memory her two children, Marianne Jackson and Michael (Nicole) Hartman; grandchildren, Alda Farlow, Danielle Jackson, Derek Hartman & Gavin Hartman; great-grandchild, Aaron Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
