World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Houghton, England, he served as a Private in the 7th Battalion King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, British Army. On July 31, 1916, the 7th battalion was consolidating a position after its capture by assault at Bazentin-le-Petit, France. Private Miller was ordered to take an important message under heavy fire and to bring back a reply at all costs. He crossed the open field and on leaving the trench was shot almost immediately. In spite of this, he compressed with his hand the gaping wound in his abdomen, delivered his message, staggered back with the answer, and fell dead at the feet of the officer to whom he delivered it. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross presented to his father by King George V at Buckingham Palace on September 9, 1916.
