US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the United States Navy as a Watertender on board the destroyer "USS Hopkins" (DD-6). He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on board the ship on February 14, 1910. His citation reads "On board the U.S.S. Hopkins for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession on the occasion of the accident to one of the boilers of that vessel". His Medal was awarded to him on March 23, 1910. He was one of two "Hopkins" sailors to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during this instance, the other being Chief Watertender Robert E. Bonney.
