George I. Shafer, 83, of County Road 50 North, died at 12:02 p.m. Sunday, September 16, 2012 at his home.
Mr. Shafer was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War era. He was a building contractor and the owner of Shafer Brothers Construction.
Mr. Shafer's memberships include the First Christian Church, Columbus Elks Club, Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion Post, St. John's Masonic Lodge #20 and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis.
He enjoyed golfing, NASCAR, woodworking and art.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Pat More officiating.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or the Fireman's Cheer Fund.

Born in Columbus November 20, 1928, Mr. Shafer was the son of Glenn F. and Irene King Shafer. He married Wilma Jean Greathouse November 16, 1948.She preceded him in death November 25, 2011.
Mr. Shafer is survived by his daughters, Mickey (Gene) Fields and Jo Anna (Rob) Kittle both of Columbus; grandchildren, Joseph Fields of Columbus, Kathleen Fields Richardson of Bloomington and Chloe Fields, Haley (Jeff) Kittle Williams, Mallory (Patrick) Maguire and Caroline Kittle, all of Columbus; 12 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Shafer of Columbus; a sister, Rosemary (Pat) More of Charlestown and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shafer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Larry Shafer on April 6, 2002; brothers, Robert, James, John and Donald Shafer and a sister, Lorene Robbins.
