Survivors were believed to have included a wife, from whom he separated long ago, and an estranged brother in Taylorville, Illinois. But the story does not end here. An argument can be made that the deceased may not have been named Thomas Hendricks at all.
"Thomas Hendricks" died having no will. His previous conversation with acquaintances in Oklahoma City, along with any personal papers left behind, led the executor of his estate to the family of John William Hendricks of Taylorville, Illinois and Boone County, Arkansas. The heirs were deposed, as were several individuals who were known to Thomas and to John William. The estate was ultimately distributed to the John William Hendricks heirs. Beyond newspapers in Oklahoma City, a wire story about the estate was published in a number of far away locations. Those articles are now known to have been erroneous.
In time, to the surprise of all, John William surfaced in Arkansas, very much alive. He spent his last years in an old folks' home in Boone County, Arkansas, where he is buried in an unmarked grave.
