In Chicago Wednesday morning at 7 o'clock passed away a former well known citizen of Boone, Royal H. Doud. Death was due to paralysis, this being the second stroke. He received one last spring but had almost entirely recovered from it when the second came. Eli H. Doud of this city received word Thursday night of the serious illness of his father and left on No. 6, at 9:45 that same evening, arriving in Chicago a few minutes after his death. Royal H. Doud was born in Lewis county, New York, and was 64 years of age at the time of his death. In Rome, N.Y. about forty years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Sheldon who survives him. Besides a tender and loving wife five children are also living as follows: Eli H. Doud of this city, James Doud of Chicago, John Doud of Cedar Rapids, Benjamin Doud of Council Bluffs and Mrs. Susian Shaaf of Newark, New Jersey. He spent the early part of his life in his native state. About twelve years ago he came to this city and started the Doud packing house, which for a few years was the most flourishing industry Boone ever had. After severing his connection with that he went to Chicago and later to Manning where he engaged in the milling business. A few months ago he returned to Chicago and resided there up to the time of his death. The funeral will be held today. The Douds have the deepest sympathy of all in their hour of sorrow.

From Boone County Democrat, Boone, Iowa, 1901.

Undertaker's record spells his middle name Holton. Almost certainly a mistake.
