BURLEY – William D Larsen, age 92, of Burley, passed away on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at Parke View Rehabilitation and Care Center in Burley of causes incident to age.
The ninth child of William E and Dora May (Davis) Larsen, D was born on April 4, 1920 in Clifton, Idaho, where he spent the first few years of his life. Moving was commonplace to the Larsen family as they struggled to make ends meet in hardscrabble times. D lived in Clifton and Fairview, Idaho, Logan and Brigham City, Utah, and Jerome and Burley, Idaho, where he graduated from Burley High School in 1940.
D served in the 341st Company, F Corps of Engineers during World War II, which involved even more moving as he built bridges and roads on the Al-Can Highway, and later moved across Europe with the Allied Forces. He and his company constructed roads and bridges for the troops as they fought to defeat Hitler. During that time, he moved more times than he cared to count.
After returning home from the Army, D bought his father's farm and vowed never to move again – a promise he kept until age necessitated more care. He farmed with horses for several years before buying his first tractor. Horses were a great love of D's and he later maintained he should have continued farming with them.
Choice family memories remain of horseback rides, buggy rides, exploring the Oregon Trail with D's wagon and participating in a wagon train re-enactment. There are also memories of learning to work, water fights, bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, family reunions, and lots of visits. Family was important to D and he kept current with his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's activities and loved their visits.
D was never in a hurry to die, but he has recently missed his parents; four sisters; and seven brothers, all of whom preceded him in death. We know he is enjoying a great reunion with them and a fishing trip or two.
In 1947, D met Marjorie Wixom at the Y-Dell dance center. She soon became his eternal companion on July 3, 1947. They shared 65 years here and look forward to eternity together. To this union were born five children, DeAnn Baker (Dale) of Chubbuck, Idaho, Kathy Warnick (Jerry), and Carolyn Peterson (Nordell), all of Layton, Utah, Brent Larsen (Holly), of Burley, Idaho, and Reed Larsen (Linda), of Pocatello, Idaho.
D was active in the LDS Church and served in several callings, including teaching positions, High Priest group leader, and service missions to the Employment Center and the Canning Center.
D is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Burley; his children; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Verda Larsen; and his wife's siblings, Helen Ivie (Russ), Clyde Wixom (Bennetta), Verna Dean King and Paul Wixom (LaRae).
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Burley LDS 3rd & 7th Ward Church, 2200 Oakley Ave., in Burley, with Bishop Steve Garn officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
