He belonged to the generation of 1960s Peruvian literature and performed in recitals that summoned crowds of students and general public. He was considered one of the most important Latin American poets and his work was also recognized with the award of the Latin World Poets Victor Sandoval in Mexico, Gabriela Mistral award from the Organization of American States (OAS), The Rubén Darío prize in Nicaragua, and also had been made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by France.
