On 9 Mar 1863 John mustered out of the 15th Massachusetts due to disability from wounds received in action.
On 6 Jan 1865 John, 22, married Ann Leahy, daughter of James and Margaret (Britt) Leahy, at Worcester, Massachusetts. They had some nine children before Ann died in 1882.
He was a member of the George H. Ward Post 10 in Worcester of the GAR. John has a government gravestone.
He lived the rest of his life in Worcester and died on 25 Jun 1917 at Worcester, MA.
