OBITUARY

Betty Carolyn Matthews Bowen, 92, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Heritage of Peachtree in Peachtree City. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel at First Baptist Church of Tifton. A graveside service will be held for Mrs. Bowen at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2020, at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Roe officiating. The family asks that COVID-19 protocol be followed by wearing masks and social distancing.

Mrs. Bowen was born in Tifton on December 1, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Robert C. Matthews and Georgia Willis Matthews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Huie Raymond Bowen, Sr.; one son, Huie Raymond Bowen, Jr.; three brothers, Robert Matthews, Fred Matthews, and Dempsey Matthews; and one sister, Jimmie Ruth Campbell.

She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Lee and Cindy Bowen of Peachtree City and David Bowen and Chris Zaleski of Bainbridge Island, Washington; one daughter-in-law, Beth Bowen of Tifton, widow of the late Huie Raymond Bowen, Jr.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew Bowen and his wife Jami Bowen of Bluffton, South Carolina, Christopher Bowen of San Angelo, Texas, Josh Bowen and his wife Kaley Bowen of Tifton and Lisa Coggin and her husband, Bryan Coggin of Newnan; and six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Kate Bowen, Cole Bowen, Ford Bowen, Will Bowen, Aaron Bowen and Wesley Coggin.

Mrs. Bowen was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Tifton, enjoying many years attending her beloved Sunday School class. She also enjoyed serving as a Sunday School teacher over the years.

Her passion was playing golf with her friends and family. She was a board member of the Spring Hill Country Club Ladies Golf Association, serving in all capacities. She was a vital part of the establishment of the annual Nanci Bowen Charity Golf Tournament in Tifton, benefiting Hospice and Oncology Services.

She was dedicated to serving the Tifton Community by becoming a member of the Pink Ladies, a volunteer organization providing assistance to patients and visitors of Tift Regional Medical Center.

Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, leaving behind her a legacy of love and faith.
