Sgt John Meikle
Birth: Sep. 11, 1898
Death: Jul. 20, 1918

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Scotland, he received the award posthumously in September 1918 for his actions as a sergeant in the 4th Battalion, The Seaforth Highlanders of the British Army on July 20, 1918 near Marfaux, France during the Hundred Days Offensive near the end of World War I. He was born in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland and joined the Seaforth Highlanders and was sent to the Western Front in France where he was killed in combat near Marfaux at the age of 19. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 20 July 1918 near Marfaux, France, Sergeant Meikle, single-handed and armed only with a revolver and a stick, rushed and put out of action a machine-gun which was delaying his company's advance. Shortly afterwards, seizing a rifle and bayonet from a fallen comrade, he charged another machine-gun post, but was killed almost on the gun position. His bravery enabled two other men who followed him to put this gun out of action." In addition to the Victoria Cross, he also received the Military Medal, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal (1914-19). His Victoria Cross and other medals are on display at The Highlanders Museum at Fort George, Inverness, Scotland. A memorial in his honor resides on Station Road in Dingwall, Scotland. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
