Gabar Singh Negi
Birth: Oct. 7, 1893
Death: Mar. 10, 1915

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Manjood Village, Uttarakhand, Northern India, he served as a Rifleman in the 2/39th Garhwal Rifles, 2nd Battalion, British Indian Army. During an attack on the German position at Neuve Chapelle, France, on March 10, 1915, Rifleman Gabar Singh Negi was one of a bayonet party which entered the main enemy trench. He was the first man to go round each traverse, driving back the enemy until they were eventually forced to surrender. He was later killed during this engagement. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on April 28, 1915. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
