***** Harry, Well a lot of time has gone under the bridge since that Halloween Night in 68. I will never forget when the mines went off and killed all those men. I always thing about how you told me to stay on the boat and not check in every hour like we were supposed to. Maybe that saved my Life. Thank you with all my heart. Every time I visit any of the moving wall or the big Wall in Washington, or a Reunion of our unit I take a special break to remember you. Well good bye again Friend Bill Mccollum

Engineman Petty Officer Third Class Harry J. Kenney was assigned to River Assault Squadron 11.

On November 1, 1968, A Viet Cong demolitions team detonates two mines on the hull of the USS Westchester County, LST 1167, as she lies at anchor in the My Tho River about 40 miles upstream from Vung Tau with other ships of the Mobile Riverine Group Alpha.

At this time, the Wesco was home to the 3/34th Artillery and had more than 10,000 rounds of 105mm and 155mm ammo plus vast quantities of other explosives on its tank deck. There were five Army helicopters on the main deck, two were wrecked beyond repair. The LST was beached, a cofferdam built around it, the mangled steel replaced, and on the 14th it was re-floated to sail to Japan for repairs.

The 18 KIAs represented the U.S. Navy's greatest single-incident combat lost of life during the War. Casualties: US 23 KIA (5 from the 9th Infantry Division), 2 Vietnamese, 27 WIA

Petty Officer Kenney was on watch in the radio room on the floating dock along side the USS WESTCHESTER COUNTY.

At 0322 a large explosion occurred on the starboard side of the dock. Immediately following the explosion, Petty Officer Kenney could not be located.

The explosion was suspected to be caused by a Viet Cong water mine, and destroyed nearly all of the floating deck. A search was conducted immediately, but the only trace found of Kenney was his wristwatch.

Kenney was listed Missing in Action, and a three-day search effort was conducted.

At the end of the search, Kenney was presumed to be dead.
