Bishop of Rochester and founder of Merton College, Oxford. Ordained as a sub-deacon in 1235, he became a clerk in the royal chancery. In 1261 he was appointed Chancellor and continued in that office until 1263. He was made a Bishop of Rochester in 1274 and died as a result of an accident while fording the River Medway.
