Mr. Spelke was the crossing guard at my elementary school. He was so friendly and caring to all of us, I wrote a letter to the local newspaper (The Stamford Advocate, still in business today) and told them how wonderful he was. He won an award, was written up in the paper and was given $25. He was so embarrassed he wanted to give me the $25! I didn't take it and told him he had to buy himself something. This was in the early 1950s, and $25 was a lot of money.
