Religious Leader. Born in Higham Ferrers, England, in or about 1362, he was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford, where he studied law. By the 1390s, he was ordained a priest and was placed on the Court of Arches in London. King Henry IV’s government began sending him abroad on ecclesiastical and diplomatic missions and in 1410, he was appointed to the royal council. He accompanied King Henry V to France in 1415, negotiated the King’s marriage to a French princess, Catherine of Valois and christened her son, the future Henry VI in 1421. After Henry V’s death in 1422, he remained on the royal council and founded the All Souls College Oxford, in 1438. He died at age 81 as Archbishop of Canterbury.
