World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Cherat in the North West Province, India, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in command of 4the Company, 1st Hertfordshire Regiment, British Army. On September 18, 1918, at Havrincourt, France, during a German counter-attack and throughout intense enemy fire, 2nd Lieutenant Young went to all his posts, warned the garrisons and encouraged the men. In the attack he rescued two of his men who had been captured, plus bombed and silenced an enemy machine-gun. Then he fought his way back to the main barricade and drove out a party of the enemy assembling there. Throughout four hours of heavy fighting he set a fine example as a leader and was last seen fighting hand-to-hand against a considerable number of the enemy before being killed. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on December 13, 1918.
