World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Aldershot, England, he served as a Corporal in the 43 RM Commandos, Royal Marines. During actions on April 2, 1945, near Lake Comacchio, Italy, Corporal Hunter was in charge of a Bren gun squad. To save the lives of his unit, under heavy enemy fire, he stormed over 200 meters of open ground in the direction of a house block in which the enemy was situated. As a result of his charge the enemy was in disarray and six enemies surrendered, the remaining enemies fled the battlefield. During his charge towards the next house Corporal Hunter was wounded mortally while reloading his Bren gun. He managed to fire all his remaining bullets at the enemy before dying. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross presented to his parents by King George VI on September 26, 1945.
