Actor. He became famous in Great Britain for his comedic theater acting roles after beginning his career as a singer in dramatic operas. After gaining acclaim by appearing in comic roles in William Brough's "Prince Amabel" and in Watts Phillips's "The Huguenot Captain" before solidifying his reputation in 1867 for his role of 'Eccles' in the comedy-drama "Caste". The performance was met with praise from critics and aided greatly in the success of the production. He continued to act until his health deteriorated, and he died less than a year after he retired from the stage.
