Composer. Born Seymour Kaufman in New York, he was a classically trained child prodigy who debuted on the piano in Carnegie Hall at age 7; was playing in society cafes in his teens; later then created his own jazz trio and began writing songs. Best known for “Sweet Charity,” “City of Angels” and pop standards such as “Witchcraft” and “The Best Is Yet to Come.” He was an accomplished jazz pianist known for his rhythmic, up-tempo style. His pop songs were recorded by such singers as Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee and Nat “King” Cole and included “Firefly” and “I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life.” He wrote music for Broadway shows for over 50 years after beginning with the 1953 revue “John Murray Anderson’s Almanac.”
