John Berkshire, 69, well-known resident of this city, died Wednesday at his home, 2018 capitol Way, following a long illness. Mr. Berkshire was born in Springfield, Ohio, March 5, 1858. He was married May 15, 1888, in Sidney, Ohio, to Miss Fannie Meyers, and together they came to this city 27 years ago, remaining here most of the time since.
Mr. Berkshire was prominent in hotel circles of the state. He was the lessee of the Mitchell hotel here a quarter of a century ago. Later he managed the Donnelly in Tacoma and following that opened the Olympus hotel in that city, an enterprise in which he was interested. Subsequently he opened and conducted for five years the Raymond hotel, in Raymond.
Following the disposition of his interests there he returned here and took the position of superintendent of public buildings and grounds under the administration of Governor Hart. He retired from active pursuits two years ago. Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Donna LeFebre, and one granddaughter, Miss Veronica LeFebre, all of this city. Funeral services will be held from the Mills chapel Friday at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. R. Franklin Hart officiating.
