Gwendolyn Joyce (VanderSchaaf) Dohr, age 88 of Peshtigo, Wis., died peacefully at Rennes Healthcare and Rehab Center East of Peshtigo, WI on Sunday, June 19, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Gwen was the first of twin daughters born July 12, 1927 in Avon, S.D. to Dr. Charles and Katie (Bos) VanderSchaaf.

Twin sister, Marilyn Joanne arrived around 1-1/2 minutes later. The twins were greeted by step-sister, Gert, step-brother, Harold and sister, Marge. A sister, Joyce, was born many years later. Gwen’s parents were immigrants from Holland and she was also proud of her Dutch ancestry. The family lived in Avon, S.D. until the twins were 10. Gwen was proud to say that she was from Avon and always told relatives and friends that she played with George McGovern (1972 Democratic Presidential Candidate).

In October of 1937, the family moved to Juneau, Wis. where her dad set up his veterinary practice. Gwen was a 1945 graduate of Juneau High School and, after graduation, attended Dodge County Normal School for two years. After getting her teaching degree, she taught in a rural school for two years and then both she and Marilyn accepted teaching jobs in Marinette, Wis. Gwen taught at Garfield Elementary School for two years. During the summer of 1969 and 1970 she attended UW-Oshkosh and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

On June 9, 1951, she married her husband, Paul Alois Dohr, who was owner of Dohr’s Hardware in Peshtigo, Wis.
After marrying Paul, Gwen continued to teach school until the birth of their son, Nick, and then became a stay at home mom to Nick and their three other children (Robin, Kelly and Marc). When all the kids were enrolled in school, Gwen went back to teaching and taught 4th grade at the Peshtigo Elementary Learning Center for 22 years, retiring in the spring of 1989. Gwen was a member of the Methodist Church in Peshtigo and Harmony. She was active in the Peshtigo Woman’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, WREA and WEAC and the Marinette Retired Teachers Association.
Gwen was a great bowler, and when she was younger, she won the “Press Gazette Bowler of the Month”. She was an excellent bridge player and enjoyed the game of golf.

After Gwen and Paul retired, they enjoyed traveling with Marilyn and Dick and friends. When Paul passed away, Gwen traveled to Europe several times and to Hawaii. Gwen was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and went to every home game until she entered Assisted Living at the Renaissance in Marinette. Gwen was proud to say that she attended a Green Bay Packer Super Bowl in San Diego even if they lost.

Gwen is survived by two daughters: Robin (John) Swiatnicki of Peshtigo, WI and Kelly (Bruce) Christensen of Menominee, Mich.;
a son, Marc (Vicki) Dohr of Neenah, WI;
a daughter-in-law, Lisa Dohr of Neenah;

six great-grandchildren, Kayli Bodway, Kaiya and Talon Belongia, Elliot and Braylen Funk, Jacey Dohr
and two step-great grandchildren: Dylan and Annika Bodway.
