Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1980 to 1985 and 1987 to 1991), he was a pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Montreal Expos and New York Yankees. Born Pascual Gross Perez, he was signed as an amateur free agent by Pittsburgh in 1976 and marked his Major League debut with them on May 7th, 1980; he pitched in 2 games that year. After joining the Braves, he experienced postseason action during the 1982 National League Championship Series and flourished in Atlanta's starting rotation the following year (1983), as he produced a career-high 15 wins earning him All-Star status. He was released by the Braves prior to the 1986 season and spent that entire year out of baseball. Perez revived his career in 1987 after signing with Montreal and yielded a 7 win 0 loss record with a 2.30 ERA in 10 starts. In 1988 while with the Expos, he was initially credited with a rain-abbreviated no-hit game against the Phillies in Philadelphia on September 24th, however the feat would later be expunged from the record books when baseball's rules changed regarding shortened no-hitters. The at-times eccentric hurler struggled with cocaine addiction and was arrested and jailed for a period of time in his homeland of the Dominican Republic for possession during the later part of his career. In 207 regular season games, he compiled a 67 win, 68 loss record with a 3.44 lifetime ERA in 1,244 innings pitched. Perez was killed during an apparent robbery in his Dominican Republic home.
