PORTSMOUTH — Elaine V. (Coles) Anuszkiewicz, 70, of Portsmouth, died peacefully Saturday, July 31, 2010, with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

Elaine is survived by her four children, Jerry of Portsmouth, Joe and his wife, Amy, of Scituate, Mass., Lisa Beach and her husband, Aaron, of Kittery, Maine, and Mike and his wife, Deb, of Portsmouth; her sister Judy Brown and her life partner, Dennis Cameron, of Yuma, Ariz.; her brother Charlie Coles and the love of his life, Nancy Hodgens, of Farmington, N.H.; her granddaughter Suzy Anuszkiewicz, and her great-grandson, Christopher Woolf, of Epping, N.H.; her nephew, Byron Brown, of Washington, D.C.; her nieces, Jennifer Coles Ashton, of Dover, N.H., and JoAnne Coles, of Portsmouth.

She is also survived by her best friend of 57 years, Louise Dusto, and her husband, Art, of Portsmouth. As the Queen of the Seacoast Red Hat Mamas, she is also survived by all of her Red Hat sisters.

Born Dec. 24, 1939, in Portsmouth, she was the loving daughter of the late Mary Shinnick Coles, of Portsmouth. Elaine will be remembered by her family and friends for her sense of humor, devotion to her family and friends, and strong spirit. Elaine enjoyed visiting the beaches of the Seacoast to watch the ocean or read a book and was an enthusiastic fan of the Red Sox, often shouting out or calling her family on the phone to talk about a particularly good — or bad — play or a home run.

A 1958 graduate of Portsmouth High School, Elaine was a longtime employee of NESLAB. In her later years, Elaine founded the Seacoast Red Hat Mamas and enjoyed the monthly lunches with her Red Hat sisters and charitable activities for the Seacoast Family Food Bank and other local organizations.

She was a member of Christ Church in Exeter, N.H.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, August 2, 2010 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth.
