SHELBURNE -John Chace Armstrong died on Nov. 4, 2009, in Shelburne from complications of aortic stenosis, a disease that robbed him of his energy and a bit of his memory, but never his analytic mind. He was delivered to the Lord peacefully, at his home, under the light of a full moon and a clear sky.
John was born in 1918 in Rochester, N.Y., the only child of George S. and Dorothy M. Armstrong. Raised in Riverside, Conn., he attended Riverside School, Brunswick School and Deerfield Academy. He graduated from Williams College and New York University. After a brief period of employment with Dupont, John went on to work with his father's firm, the George S. Armstrong Company, in New York City. He worked there as a consulting engineer until his retirement as president of the company in 1995.
John married Helga Evensen in 1950, and until her untimely death in 1974, raised their three daughters together. His unfailing and absolute devotion to his children and their wellbeing stirred his spirit until his last breath. He was married to Mary Helen Post Hurlimann from 1977 until 2001. While he held her three daughters, Mary Ann, Lily and Sandy in the highest regard and with much affection, Sandy held a piece of his heart. Aside from the pride he took in his work and the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, John was deeply proud of his efforts on behalf of the New York University Alumni Federation. He leaves his children: Karin and her husband, Arthur Newhouse of Stowe; Christine of Shelburne; and Lise of South Burlington, and grandchildren: Bart and wife, Amy; Kirsten and husband, Ben; Matthew, Anna Christina, Brendan, Christian and Lille, and great grandsons: Chace and Liam, all who cherish his memory.
Private services were held on Nov. 7, 2009, at the Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Conn.
