Edward Madden Bigler, of Vero Beach, FL and Greenwich, CT, died at his home on August 9, 2005 of liver disease.

Born June 1, 1921, the son of Mary Louise Gerstell and Paul Gray Bigler. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Renee Holt Bigler, two sons, Edward M. Bigler Jr., of Tempe, AZ, Paul Gray Bigler of Darien, CT. Three stepchildren, M. Barclay Brown III, George Holt Brown, Diane Justine Buck, and six grandchildren.

He attended The Taft School and Princeton University, Class of '44. A decorated veteran who served as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator in WWII in the 15th Air Corp. He flew 35 combat missions with the 459th Bomber Squadron, stationed in Italy. A great sadness for him was at the end of his tour, he and fifteen other planes from his squadron were on their way from the Azores via Nova Scotia to the U.S. Nine of the fifteen planes were lost in a fierce storm, as were his comrades.

Mr. Bigler, after an extensive career in oil and gas exploration, established a non profit organization in 1981 in Greenwich, CT named Pathways. It's mission was to serve the needs of the mentally ill, particularly in providing housing. It continues to be a viable agency today.

As an avid athlete he enjoyed many sports, especially tennis and golf. As a long time member of the Racquet and Tennis Club in NYC, The John's Island and Orchid Island Clubs in Vero Beach, FL, The Field Club and Stanwich Clubs of Greenwich, his friendship and camaraderie will not be soon forgotten.

The burial services will be held in Christ Church, 254 East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, on Friday, August 12, 2005 at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be in Putnam Cemetery.
