John Thomas Becker, 90, of 36 Brookridge Drive, Greenwich, died September 17 2010 after a short illness.

He was born in May 1920 in Pontiac, Michigan. A graduate of Michigan State University, he enlisted in World War II and attended Navy Officer training school at Notre Dame University. During the war, he distinguished himself as a commander of subchaser crafts from the Caribbean to the North Pacific.

In 1951, John established Eurpac Service Inc. a global sales, marketing and distribution services company. From a Paris-based two-person operation the company expanded to four continents and staff numbering in the thousands. Among markets served, Eurpac became a leader in consumer product distribution to military commissaries and exchanges worldwide. Becker and his wife, Sheila moved to Greenwich in 1958, and John quickly became an active and involved citizen.
A man of opinion, dedication and action, he owned and operated the local AM station, WGCH. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Board of Greenwich YMCA, was on the board of the Greenwich Historical Society, and was Chairman of a United Way annual giving campaign. He actively and generously contributed to the growth and well-being of many Greenwich institutions including Parsonage Cottage, Greenwich Hospital and The Bruce Museum.

Active in and dedicated to the political process, he was committed to the Republican Party throughout his life. He participated in the Greenwich RTM and acted two terms as Chairman. He served several terms on the Republican State Central Committee. In 1982, he ran for Connecticut State Treasurer on the Republican Party ticket and later ran for the US Congressional seat vacated by Senator McKinney.

Among his many activities outside the local community, he was a founding member of the Armed Forces Marketing Council and served on the Board of the USO in Washington D. C. His interests were varied from building a stable of race horses to catching fish in the waters off of his residence in the Bahamas.

Above all, Becker will be remembered as a valuable contributor and a focused leader, dedicated to his family, friends, and community. His knowledge on almost any topic combined with his accurate, matter-of-fact analysis of the world made him an inspiration to all who encountered him [MMB1].

He was predeceased by his wife Sheila in 2001 and is survived by his four daughters, Jamee Becker of Greenwich, Lisa Edmundson of Greenwich, Virginia "Gigi" Becker of Lyme and Margaret McDonough Becker of Redwood City; a son Frank "Jed" Becker of Darien; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister Margaret Miller of Virginia Beach.

The family will accept visitors from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. this Thursday, September 23, 2010 @ 36 Brookridge Drive, Greenwich. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Christ Church, 254 East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich.
Private Burial will follow in Putnam Cemetary.
