Douglas Whitten Allan, Jr., 71 of South Kingstown, died Sunday at home, following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Rhodes) Allan for 49 ½ years.

Born in Berkeley, CA he was a son of the late Douglas W., Sr. and Marjorie H. (Tyring) Allan.

He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island in 1967. Mr. Allan was an Inorganic Chemist for the Hoechst Corporation, retiring in 1997. He enjoyed family camping, travelling throughout Europe, and will be remembered as a wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather, "Grumps".

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter Catherine Allan Robinson of South Kingstown, a son, Douglas Whitten Allan, III of South Kingstown; six grandchildren; and two brothers, John N. Allan of Hope and Eric Peterson of North Scituate. His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, South Kingstown. Burial will follow in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 10985 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
