Aletha K. Adascheck, 89, Yakima, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born November 4, 1916 in Ellensburg, Washington to Pastor Ewald and Lydia Kirst. She attended elementary school in Clarkston, Washington and graduated from Clarkston High School in 1933. She enrolled for two years in Lewiston Normal School, Lewiston, Idaho. While there she was on the newspaper staff, editor of the yearbook and member of the debate team. From there she transferred to Washington State College in Pullman and graduated Cum Laude with a BA in English in 1937. She continued graduate work at WSC to earn her Washington secondary teacher's certificate. During that time she taught one college English class and practice taught at John Rogers High School in Spokane. She was a member of the Phi Lambda Theta, educational honorary, She also did graduate work at the University of Washington and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
In September 1938 she began teaching English at Sunnyside High School. During her stay there she was also advisor to the newspaper staff, advisor of the yearbook staff, of the camera club, and of the rifle club. Her home room was in charge of the sale of World War II Bonds and war stamps. She was delegate to the National Education Association convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Althea moved to Wapato High School were she taught English and the Journalism class which put out the school newspaper and once a year the city newspaper. The last two years she acted as Guidance Counselor for the school system. During this time she was also a member of the board of the Washington Education Association.
On July 11, 1949 she married T. R. Adascheck, pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Yakima. They were blessed with two daughters: Rebecca Finney and Deborah Koepsell.
After marriage she followed the role of pastor's wife, adding to it three years of teaching in Grace Lutheran School.
Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Finney of Milton-Freewater, OR; and son-in-law, Jeffrey Koepsell and wife, Lynn, and grandchildren, Kristen Koepsell, Timothy Koepsell, Samuel Koepsell and Isaiah Koepsell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor, T. R. Adascheck, her parents, and her daughter, Deborah Koepsell.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2006, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1207 S. 7th Avenue. Concluding services and burial will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Memorials contributions in Althea's memory may be given to Grace Lutheran Church or School, Evergreen Lutheran High School or to charities of the donor's choice in care of Keith & Keith Funeral Home.
