He was the son of Robert D. and Mabel (Gilman) Barber.
He graduated from Rutland High School, and from Lincoln College in Indianapolis in 1949, with a doctor of chiropractic degree. For the next 10 years, he practiced in Vermont and Florida.
He married Nancy Agan in Lebanon, N.H., on July 1, 1961.
He served a tour of duty with the 101st Airborne Division, Dr. Barber practiced in Windsor from 1958 to 2002. During that time, he had another practice in Springfield with secondary offices in White River Junction and Wilmington.
He was a founding member of the Chiropractic Association and president of the Vermont Chiropractic Association. He was appointed to the Vermont State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He was also town Democratic chairman and state committeeman. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor.
