Margaret Eloise Austin was my maternal great grandmother. She was born Margaret Eloise Jones on July 23rd, 1922 and passed away on September 14th, 2014. She was born in Wichita, Kansas and went by Eloise. In an effort to assist in the war, she worked at Beech Aircraft in 1942. She was working at a drugstore in Wichita, Kansas when a friend of hers set her up on a blind date. After that date, Robert Austin began to hang out to socialize with her at work. Robert went to war and they exchanged letters back and forth while he was gone. When he returned, they married. They moved to Peck, Kansas after their marriage on December 23rd, 1945 then moved to Towanda, Kansas from 1949 to 1953. They lived on worked on farms both places. Shortly after that, they moved to Severy, Kansas where they owned and ran Austin’s Café together while also living and working on a farm. She became a nurse in the late 60’s and worked as one until 1989. During her marriage, she had 7 children, then 25 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. She was a stern woman, but became more loving as she got older. Christmas was her favorite holiday and enjoyed having her house full of her family and their families to exchange gifts, eat lots of food, and enjoy each other’s company. Labor Day was the same as Christmas. Eloise really loved her family. She enjoyed many hobbies including traveling, she loved to travel and visited many different states. She also enjoyed quilting. She made a quilt for every living member in her family before her death. She had also made quilts to be raffled off as prizes in fairs.
