Don passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of December 16, 2008, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on February 4, 1931. He is the son of Paul Akers and Hannah Mae (Hawkins) Akers.
Don grew up in and around Terre Haute, until he graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1949. In 1950 he joined the United States Air Force, where he served for three years, with part of his tour being in England. He was later honorably discharged after achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his discharge he attended Columbus University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in business administration. The majority of Don's working career was spent as an accountant (tax specialist) in hotel management and bowling center management.
Don, with his late wife Evelyn, operated several soup, sandwich, and pizza shops; and were known as talented candy makers. A specialty he later shared Susan, in their years together.
Don, an avid bowler, participated in over 25 national bowling tournaments; and he was also an avid gardener.
He and his wife, Susan, only had ten years together. They traveled to many bowling conventions.
Don was Club Manager for Ontario Elk's Lodge #1690. His last job was for Winner's Horseshoe at Annex, OR, managing the establishment.
Don is survived by his sisters Virginia (Jenny) and Barbara; his wife Susan; his step-children; step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.
