Julian was the youngest of four children born to Simon and Santiaga Achabal in Ispaster, Bizcaia, Spain on June 8, 1936. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, family was always his top priority. His guiding daily principle was to serve God and his fellow man through charity work, and volunteerism.
Julian immigrated to the United States in 1955, and immediately demonstrated extreme pride and devotion to his adopted homeland serving in the U.S. Army, becoming a U.S. citizen, learning the English language and displaying his patriotism at every opportunity, in conjunction with his love and pride for his Basque heritage.
Upon coming to the U.S., Julian first worked for Wilson Sheep Co., and after a few years joined the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany and played soccer for the U.S. Army team.
Upon completion of his service he moved to Boise where he married the love of his life, Rosemarie Salutregui, had a son Steven, and thoroughly enjoyed his family, gardening, fishing, hunting, camping, and playing the card games Mus and pinochle. Julian worked for Garrett - ANR Freightlines for 26 years, and was a proud member of the Teamsters, Local 483.
Julian spent a good portion of his life promoting various Basque causes in the U.S. and in Euskadi (the Basque Country) through his volunteerism in many organizations such as Euzkaldunak Inc. where he was awarded a lifetime/legacy achievement award, the Boise Basque Museum, Aniak Danok, and other Basque clubs throughout Idaho. Julian's passion for volunteerism was also displayed at St. Luke's Hospital where he was a volunteer for 4 years.
Julian was a strong influence in starting the Basque Charities Association which assisted hundreds of Basques and non-Basques for nearly 30 years by raising, and donating monies for those in need. Always one to work hard behind the scenes to get things accomplished, Julian was hesitant and humbled to receive the accolades he deserved.
Julian is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rosemarie; son Steven, daughter-in-law Carmen; grandchildren, Ava and Ander; his brother Simon and his wife Toni, and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arantza; brother, Juan Luis, and niece Neskutz.
No matter the many obstacles Julian faced throughout his life, his resiliency, courage, sense of humor and ability to love and be loved were characteristics that will always be remembered by those fortunate enough to have him be a part of their lives.
