George Moreby Acklom
Occupation: Educationalist
Birth: 1870 in India
Death: 7 NOV 1954 in California, USA

George Moreby Acklom, was born in India in 1870 where his father was a British civil servant. When the family returned to England, George attended Clifton School, Bedford School and Queen's College, Cambridge, where he received a B.A. in 1891 and an
M.A, in 1894. He was Mathematics Master at St. Mary's College, Harrow.

Moving to Canada, Acklom was Second Master at Cambridge House School in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1891-2, Second Master at King's College, Windsor, N.S., 1893-5, Mathematics and Science Master at Bishop's College, Lennoxville, Quebec, and in 1897 founded
Harrow House School in Halifax where he was Headmaster, 1897-1906. In 1906 he moved back to King's College, Windsor, briefly as Professor of English before moving permanently to the U. S. in 1907. The family lived in a small apartment in a poor
section of Columbia Heights, New York City, from 1907 to 1922, when they moved to Hastings-on-Hudson. For 40 years, Acklom was an editor at the E.P. Dutton Publishing firm in New York City, commuting on the New York Central Railway.

George Acklom may have been a strict school master in many ways, but he was a man of many parts. In England he took part in amateur theatre and was a delegate to the Anglican Synod. He was a rowing champion in light pairs and a member of the New
Oxford and Cambridge Club. He joined the prestigious conservative Primrose League in England and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club in Halifax. He wrote several books of poetry, including "Margaret-An Epic Poem." His marriage to Violet Manners in 1897
produced a daughter and a son. He died in California on November 7, 1954, apparently reconciled with his son.
