This is the headstone marking the communal grave where Private Atherton is buried. He is also commemorated on the screen wall at the front of the cemetery his name has been added to match CWGC records as G W Atherton. Correct name was John William Atherton.

Son of Mrs. Mary Ann Atherton, of 49, Robert St., Hyde Rd., Gorton; husband of Margaret Hall (formerly Atherton) nee Whittleworth, of 11, Carlton Terrace, Church Lane, Gorton, Manchester. He died aged 43
