Highlander
D Company
The Highlanders, 4th Battalion
The Royal Regiment of Scotland
British Army

He was attached to 1st Battalion The Rifles Battlegroup deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Hldr McLaren was reported missing from Check Point Salaang in the early hours of the morning and was later found dead following an extensive search of the area in the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district of Helmand province. He had gunshot wounds and his body, stripped of equipment, was found in a stream. It appeared he was killed by the Taliban after walking away from the remote base and there were reports that he was heading to a nearby Afghan National Army base to retrieve some misplaced night-vision goggles. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death are under investigation.

Aged 20, he was from the Sighthill area of Edinburgh and joined the army in August 2009. After completing his training he was posted to B Company 4 SCOTS in Fallingbostel, Germany and undertook a demanding year of training before deploying in April to Afghanistan. A calm and cool individual, he was described as a hard working and highly professional soldier. Although he had a small build, he was extremely fit and a talented runner. Friends said he had a big heart, he would go out of his way to do someone a favour and was always the life of the party.

Hldr McLaren leaves behind his parents James and Ann, sister Kirsty, brothers James and Ross, grandmother Evelyn, uncle Graham, aunt Heather, close friend Michael and other relatives and friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on July 26, 2011 at Mortonhall Crematorium Main Chapel, Edinburgh.
