Martin B. Ashley Sr., 86, a native of Bayou Chene and a longtime resident of Calumet, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at 5:32 a.m. at his daughter's home in Charenton. Mr. Martin was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and was a former member of the American Legion. He was a boat captain for more than 40 years and also a commercial fisherman. He retired from Diamond Services. Mr. Martin was also an avid outdoorsman and gardener. The family requests that visiting hours be observed Monday, Sept. 12, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Ibert's Mortuary in Franklin, and again on Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the mortuary. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ibert's Mortuary. Interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Centerville. The Rev. Don Whatley will officiate the service. He is survived by five sons, Hughy Ashley and his wife, Brenda, of Baldwin, Carl Ashley and his wife, Cathy, of Ricohoc, Allen Dean Ashley and his wife, Pat, of Ricohoc, Thomas Ashley and his wife, Wanda, of Plaquemine, and Gordon Ashley and his wife, Jean, of Maryland; three daughters, Alice Ann Diggs and her husband, James, of Harahan, Rose Ashley of Ricohoc, and Leona "Gail" Champagne and her husband, Roy, of Charenton; five brothers, Doyle Ashley of Bayou Sorrel, Dudley Ashley of Franklin, Huey Ashley of Opelousas, Winston Ashley of West Virginia and C.J. Ashley of Simmesport; three sisters, Dot Beaman of Satsuma, Florence Templet of Plaquemine and Eldora Allen of Longview, Texas; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Bergeron Ashley; a son, Martin B. Ashley Jr.; parents, Martin Van Buren Ashley and Tina Pissirello Ashley; brother, Calvin Ashley; sister, Flavia Kelly; and granddaughter, Pauline Wain.
