John Adams
John Adams was born in 1817 in England, the son of James and Rebecca Adams. He married M ary Muscroft, who was born March 5, 1820 daughter of John Muscroft and Martha Royals. He was a clerk and a Laye preacher in the Methodist Church and very strict. He played a violin and was very musical. He studied his Bible and taught it to his children so they knew it from cover to cover.

Mary ran a boarding house to help make ends meet. One night when John
came home from work his wife was sitting in the dining room where the roomers were eating. Sh e was nursing her baby. He abused her because he didn't think it proper. She left him and left the seven children with him, the baby just being very small. She came to America and lived the rest of her life in Philadelphia. My grandfather, James Adams, was the second child, and when he joined the Church and came to America he found her but he never told us much of her.

John Adams, with his brother Henry, started the Refuge Insurance Company. John was the B ranch Manager in Shefield. This Company is now one of the largest insurance companies in England.

When James, his son and family joined the Mormon Chruch, John disowned them. He never s poke to my grandfather again, altho he was very good to Martha and children when James left them to come to America to find work and a home.

John died at the home of his daughter Jane Marsden February 2,1899 and was buried Februa ry 4, 1899 at City Road Cemetery, Shefield, England.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I Karen Backus Kleinman ,was preparing to teach a genealogy class on English Research. I decided to use my great grandfather James Adams, who was a Englishman and came to the United States in the 1870's as an example. Having been cut from all his family because of his faith in the LDS Church, he and his wife and 2 children came to Pennsylvania. Here my grandfather, George John Adams was born 23 Apr 1874. James said he found his mother there in Pennsylvania. A tradition my mother passed on to me about James Adams was that his mother Mary Muscroft had left the family when the youngest daughter Jane was just a baby. She left the family because as she was nursing Jane in the same room that one of their borders was in, her husband John Adams, was upset and abused her.
We had found John and all the children in the 1861 Census so I decided to look in the same Census for Mary. I found Mary living with a man named Clement Gregory. I remembered that name Clement Gregory and discovered he was a visitor in the home of John's parents, James and Rebecca Adams in the 1851 Census. Then I could not find her again in the 1871 census, but remembering the story of James my mother told me, I decided to check the Pennslyvania census. I found Clement Gregory with his wife Mary in Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, which is where my grandfather was born. The couple was also found in the 1880 Census.
