Amanda Lou (Swearengin) Henshaw was born at home in Swaim, Jackson County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Albert David Swearengin and Wade Hampton (Bishop) Sanders Swearengin.

"Mandy" married Ernest ("Earn") Wann Henshaw February 17, 1923 and had 5 children: Hampton, was stillborn at birth and buried in the Bouldin Cemetery; Edith Grace; Lois Hampton (male); Elsie Faye, and Ernest Jimmie Dean (female).

Amanda's siblings: Eliza Ellen, Jones, Callie, John David, Jesse James, and Charlie

She was a very strong-willed woman and worked very hard. She used to roll her own cigarettes and chew snuff. She built a 2-seater outhouse by herself and raised chickens and a huge garden. We used to pick polk salad and she would make a wonderful batter and fry it in her cast iron skillet on her wood stove. She never had an indoor bathroom or her very own running water, or air conditioning. She had to get her water from a well bucket. She would wash her clothes outside in a big black kettle and use a scrub board. She made her own lye soap. She used to trade with the peddler that made weekly visits. She'd trade her eggs for such things as sugar, cornmeal, kerosene, and coffee. She sewed her daughters clothing out of flower sacks. She had all her babies at home.

She would get out of bed every morning at 4:30 a.m. and go to bed around 8:30 p.m. All the family would gather round the wood stove during cold winter evenings and talk about "old" times and laugh until our sides hurt. Those days were wonderful days!

After her husband passed, she moved in with one of her daughters.

The Daily Sentinel ran her obituary on October 12, 1990:
