He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII whose plane was shot down over Germany. Wounded and captured by the Nazis, he served 14 months as a POW in the famous Stalag 17. He was awarded the Purple Heart, 5 Bronze Stars, and the Air Medal. He remained a member of the American Prisoners of War and attended reunions until he could no longer travel. John worked as a machinist at the Bethlehem Steel for 35 years. Next to his family, the great love of his life was German music. A self-taught musician, John played the button box accordion with friends at local clubs, including the Edelweiss Haus, the Coplay Sangerbund, and the Northampton VFW, for many years. He was an active member of Queenship of Mary Church, Northampton.
Survivors: In addition to his faithful companion of the last 13 years, Margaret, son, John J. Augustine, Jr. and his wife Dolores of Lansdale, daughter, JoAnn wife of Frank Klucsarits of Walnutport, 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, sister, Anna of Charleston, WV. John was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Augustine.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 25 at 10:30 a.m. in Queenship of Mary Church, 1324 Newport Ave., Northampton. Family and friends may call Tuesday 6 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday 9 - 10:00 a.m. in Reichel Funeral Home, 326 E. 21st Street, Northampton. Burial will follow with military honors at Our Lady of Hungary Cemetery, Northampton.
